Info about American Spirit Week:

American Spirit Week is a call to service – a call to all cheerleaders, dancers, coaches and fans to become involved in their communities.

This summer, Universal Cheerleaders Association will be promoting American Spirit Week to the 200,000 cheerleaders that attend our camps. American School Spirit Week, September 7-11, 2009, is a week long effort to encourage cheerleaders to show their leadership in their communities and their compassion for the less fortunate.

The week will start on September 7, in Las Vegas, with the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. Every year UCA helps raise money for MDA. This year marks the 20th year Universal Cheerleaders Association cheerleaders have been donating money and performing in the Telethon. Don’t forget to tune into the MDA telethon to watch UCA’s performance. Click here to tell us how your squad is donating their time.

The week continues with National School Spirit Day: 9/9/09. This day has been designated as a day for cheerleaders to put aside their scheduled cheerleading practice and devote that time to community service instead. Cheerleaders are encouraged to be visible examples in their community to others, and to show how their team can make a difference to people in need of help.

The week will culminate in a Pep Rally on Friday night, September 11. Cheerleaders that attend Universal Cheerleaders Association camps will be instructed on how to orchestrate a heroes rally for their school, offering this day as a tribute to local heroes.

As the new cheerleading coach, Katelyn Hancock from Shippensburg, PA knew she wanted to turn the Shippensburg Middle School cheerleading program around. One of the first things she wanted to do was get her new squad involved with the community.

An organization the Shippensburg cheerleading squad knew they wanted to help out with was the Daisy Fund. The Daisy Fund is an organization that was started by a local family, The Evitts, who were affected by cancer and wanted to reach out to other families.

To help them out, the Shippensburg squad spent the day working in a kitchen serving food and receiving donations from the guests by passing around a donation bucket. They also painted faces for donations. At the end of the day, the cheerleaders raised over $5,000 that was donated to families of local cancer patients. The money should help to cover travel, food, and lodging expenses while caring for their sick family member.

Katelyn said, “The girls did a wonderful job this year. I'm so proud of everything they’ve accomplished and I am excited to see what the girls will be able to raise next year!”

Throughout the year, the squad also plans to participate in a variety of other community service projects. By the end of the year, they will have participated in over 10 community service projects and hope to raise over $4,000 more dollars to donate to other organizations.
