Keeping Your Administration Informed
New Coaches Survival Guide

Varsity recognizes the value of exchanging ideas between cheerleading advisors and coaches from different schools, but unfortunately the outcome of these discussions rarely reaches the appropriate administrators. It is imperative to report program progress to your school administration, especially in high concern areas like your team's mission and the safety standards of your program.

Here is a sample letter that you can personalize and forward to your principal and athletic director. Copy the text below and paste it into a word processing application like Microsoft Word. Then add your school's information and address it to the appropriate parties at your school. You may be surprised by the respect you earn from taking the time to keep your administration informed.

Dear (Principal/Athletic Director),

The (School Name) cheerleading squad has recently attended Universal Cheerleaders Association training camp at (Camp location). As part of our training, we were asked to evaluate our program and establish priorities for our future activities. I thought it would be of interest to you to know the priorities we have established. They are as follows:

  1. The squad’s first priority is to their academic programs.
  2. The primary role of our cheerleading program is to support athletics, and we will spend the majority of time developing ways to increase school spirit and school pride.
  3. Our squad has a responsibility to uphold, to reflect, and to project the goals and ideas of our school. We intend to be good public relations ambassadors to the school and its athletic programs.
  4. If our squad participates in competition this year, we will not participate to the detriment of our other school-related activities.

A second area that we addressed was program safety. We evaluated our practices and have adopted comprehensive safety guidelines that include:

  1. The development of an emergency plan.
  2. Partner stunt safety
  3. Tumbling safety
  4. Pyramid safety
  5. Practice session safety

We also developed a game plan to establish new school traditions and improve our existing spirit-raising programs (List ideas for the upcoming year).

I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss in further detail the squad's mission and safety guidelines.

Sincerely,
