In the small town of Damascus, VA, the cheerleaders weren’t seen as leaders in their school or in their community. Neither group had a positive perception of the team. After receiving the position of the cheerleading coach at Holston High School, Gina Thomas knew she had a lot of work to do to turn the squad around.
To accomplish her goals for the Varsity team, Gina, took time out of her already busy schedule to visit every business in the community and challenged them to participate in a “Most Spirited Business” competition during the homecoming week.
After two years of dedication and lots of hard work, Gina and the Holston High School cheerleaders brought out the community spirit of the whole town of Damascus!
Alicia Paige Sullivan nominated Gina for UCA’s Coach of the Month and says, “Ever since Gina took the Varsity position over, there hasn’t been a week during football season that you could drive down Main Street in Damascus and not be blinded by a wave of red, black and white.”
The cheer squad is very thankful Gina took over the cheer position. It took a lot of sweat and commitment, but as a team they managed to change their image and have become role models for their community.
